It's A TIE-RRIFIC Charity Event
Canada's largest pawnbroker kicks off the 20th Annual Tie Day in November, benefiting the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society
In 1996 Bill Clinton was elected to his 2nd Presidential term, Snoop Dogg was on the charts, and Nintendo 64 was released as the gamer’s latest and greatest.
That same year on Saturday December 7th, TIE DAY began as a friendly challenge between Royal City Jewellers & Loans Founder and President, Howard Isman and his Loans Manager, Ken Basso. Both parties agreed to each donate five dollars to the Food Bank for every staff member that wore a tie and made a food or monetary donation to the food bank.
After that modest beginning it was decided that TIE DAY should continue every year on the last Saturday in November. In 1998 the company not only accepted donations of food and money, we also decided to auction celebrity autographed ties and original hand painted art with proceeds going to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.
Starting with local celebrity autographs from the likes of radio announcer Bro Jake, Jim “Dirty 30” Young and Lui Passaglia from the B.C. Lions, this event grew into a month long TIE CAMPAIGN. Well known artists such as Robert Bateman and Ross Penhall contributed original art work to the cause. Local TV and movie production companies began to help and through the years with the help of hundreds of international stars and celebrities such as Jann Arden, Wayne Gretzky, and Alex Burrows they have raised over $180,000 for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society.
The names of the celebrities and the technology may have changed but the dedication to giving back to the community hasn’t as current company President Michael Isman and his staff continues the tradition his father started.
