From Life to Death
+ Calendar 04/06/2018 05:00 PM 04/06/2018 07:00 PM America/Vancouver From Life to Death The Arts Council of New Westminster and the New West Hospice Society present “From Life to Death”, an exhibition at the Anvil Centre Community Art Space that aims to normalize conversations and messages about dying, death, and grief. For the most part, our community is death-denying and this exhibition serves to create a dialogue that encourages individuals to share their stories and journeys on these issues. Our intention has galvanized the arts community to produce pieces that investigate the personal journey we all make through life, until our deaths. The exhibition contains the artist’s personal interpretation of the theme, exhibiting works that consider the journey we are making to live until death, the way the artist would like to see their lives at death, how living is taking place until the last breath, and what the artist has learned from those who died before them. Sustainable Film Screening with Live Music
+ Calendar 04/18/2018 06:30 PM 04/18/2018 09:00 PM America/Vancouver SUSTAINABLE: Film Screening benefitting the New West Farmers Market Join the New West Farmers Market for a screening event of the award winning documentary, Sustainable. Doors will open at 6:30pm with live music and an opportunity to bid on various silent auction items donated by community partners. Sustainable is a vital investigation of the economic and environmental instability of America’s food system, from the agricultural issues we face — soil loss, water depletion, climate change, pesticide use — to the community of leaders who are determined to fix it. Sustainable is a film about the land, the people who work it and what must be done to sustain it for future generations. The narrative of the film focuses on Marty Travis, a seventh-generation farmer in central Illinois who watched his land and community fall victim to the pressures of big agribusiness. Determined to create a proud legacy for his son, Marty transforms his profitless wasteland and pioneers the sustainable food movement in Chicago. Sustainable travels the country seeking leadership and wisdom from some of the most forward thinking farmers like Bill Niman, Klaas Martens and John Kempf – heroes who challenge the ethical decisions behind industrial agriculture. It is a story of hope and transformation, about passion for the land and a promise that it can be restored to once again sustain us. The film will begin at 7pm and there will be a Q&A session after with partners of the Farmers Market where we will be able to speak more into how food sustainability affects us here in British Columbia. This event is to raise funds for the New West Farmers Market's low cost produce stand which provides local produce to the community at a discounted cost, making wholesome produce accessible to those in need. We provide a selection of fresh-picked produce grown at a BC farm or community garden at very affordable prices alongside the typical food bank items. So far, the program has been very successful; many are thankful to have access to high-quality fruits and vegetables, and they appreciate their value. The act of choosing and purchasing produce has much more dignity than simply being handed a hamper. For more details and to purchase your tix online, please visit the event's website above. A Man and His Prostate
+ Calendar 04/27/2018 12:00 AM 04/29/2018 12:00 AM America/Vancouver A Man and His Prostate The Anvil Centre Theatre is thrilled to present the exclusive engagement of comedy legend, ED ASNER in the hit comedy A Man and His Prostate by Ed Weinberger for ONLY TWO SHOWS at the Anvil Centre Theatre on April 27 & 28th. These two performances are the only appearances by Mr. Asner in British Columbia. Ed Asner, the much beloved Emmy Award-winning actor (Mary Tyler Moore Show, Lou Grant) stars in this seriously funny show about a serious subject. The play is based on a true life medical emergency of his close friend Ed Weinberger, award-winning writer of the Mary Tyler Moore Show, and his journey to discover his inner self both literally and figuratively. This near tragedy is masterfully transformed into a poignant monologue perfectly portrayed by Asner as he visits the hospital in preparation for a surgery he needs but doesn’t want. Described by critics a “not just a play, but a public service in a comedy format”. A Man and His Prostate takes a serious look at the disease that fatally affects almost a quarter of a million men every year. This disease is treatable, even curable when diagnosed early, yet men are often reluctant to admit let alone discuss their symptoms. Hopefully this production can help men open up to talking about the problem. Buy your tix now via the event's website above. Anvil Centre Theatre true MM/DD/YYYY aMyetLVwQzjnGkYtOmxH22158
