Tuesday, January 14, 2020

As Downtown New West grows into one of the Lower Mainland’s go-to locations for delicious food, it’s no surprise that there’s such a bountiful selection of plant-based eats.

With such a flourishing foodie scene, we’re here to shine a light on six of Downtown New West’s most delicious plant forward dishes for hungry herbivores and adventurous omnivores alike.

Amaranthus is a not-so-hidden gem in the River Market. They are making innovative, plant-forward dishes that don’t shy away explosive flavor and bold presentation. Check out their famous veggie burger, which has fried shallots, swiss chard, smoked blueberry bbq sauce, and can be made with local vegan cheese.

Vietnamese food is not always known for being the most vegan-friendly cuisine - but here in Downtown New West, V-Cafe is transporting traditional dishes into a plant-forward future. Try their burrito-sized lemongrass “chickn” salad roll.

Not only is Pizzeria Ludica one of Canada’s best pizza restaurants, but they also happen to have an extensive vegan menu. Most of these pies are made with a creamy cashew mozzarella, which melts and tastes just like the real thing, if not better.

Spud Shack is most well-known for their Monday deals, where they offer 50% off classic poutine and 30% off specialty poutines. However, many may not know that all of their gravy is made cruelty-free and that they offer delicious cheese alternatives. Try their “PB&J”, which is packed with Indonesian satay, peanut sauce, blackberry jam, cilantro, and crushed peanuts.

Old Crow Coffee is essentially Downtown New West’s living room. Go there to study and you’ll probably run into a friend. Try one of their vegan and veggie forward options anytime of the week, including their Harvest AF Sandwich, cookies or a specialty plant-based donut on a Wednesday.
