New West in Snapshots

Across the magnificent and mighty Fraser River in the award-winning Westminster Pier Park that’s home to breathtaking riverfront views, relaxin’ hammocks, tasty concession, playgrounds, and LOADS more fun-tastic features  … is a fascinating public art display called Community on the River: The Place Where People Meet.

This eye-catching art piece, is made up of 87 historical photographs which individually captures landmark moments that have uniquely shaped New Westminster. Facing the glistening Fraser River, this powerful photo panel mural offers both glimpses into New West’s historic Lytton Square – which housed a large public market, and the vibrant city’s past.

As you step into the art piece and climb to the top or rest in the middle, the photographs weave themselves together into an intricate tapestry - vividly showcasing the ever-changing, yet always lively, community on the Fraser.

You’ll start to hear the hustle and bustle of British Columbia’s first capital, and learn that the land which you’re standing on has been the home of the Coast Salish Indigenous peoples since time immemorial.

In front of the artwork, there’s a handy legend on a podium where you’ll find yourself feeling intrigued as you follow it to put names to faces, and single moments to dynamic stories. Or, you can always just choose to use your own imagination and spin up your own tales!
