07:00pm -09:00pm
Have you ever watched in wonder as a magician seemed to do the impossible? Were you delighted? Unsettled? Curious how the illusion was constructed?
Come join us for an evening with world-renowned mentalist and Kudoz host, Christopher Taylor. You'll learn some simple illusions. You'll meet and mingle with some fantastic folks over food and beverages.
But more than that, you'll discover how magic is as much about creating a narrative as it is about sleight-of-hand. You'll learn how this craft can be more than entertainment - how it can be brought into the day-to-day and impact how you experience your life, and how it can become a dimension of seeing that opens new possibilities.

James Nizam Artist Talk
05:00pm -06:00pm
James Nizam talks about his photographic practice and artistic career, including his photomural at TELUS Plaza in New Westminster.
Please note the talk is in room 417.
Nizam’s public artwork for Capture Photography Festival, entitled Heliographic Scale (2017), is installed as the backdrop of the Telus Building in New Westminster for one full year. On the stave-like tables of an abandoned limestone mine on Texada Island in the Strait of Georgia, a sequence of flashes bursts across the quarried landscape by means of the sun. Utilizing the shiny surface of a stamper plate (used to impress grooves during the production of vinyl records) as a reflecting disk to transmit sunlight toward the camera, Nizam orchestrated an ascending “scale” of star formations, which he has recorded within a panoramic view.
Presented in partnership by Capture Photography Festival and the City of New Westminster Public Art Program

New West Film Fest FREE Screening of "Stories We Tell"
01:00pm -04:00pm
On April 19th the New West Film Society will be hosting a free screening of the critically acclaimed documentary Stories We Tell by actor, activist and director Sarah Polley. The exploration of families, the secrets they keep and her own role in uncovering the truth has made the film an important part of Canada’s lexicon of documentary films.
The screening is part of a nation-wide day of free film screenings hosted by Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and film festival organizations across the country. In addition to the relationship with TIFF, the Government of Canada and RBC will be presenting partners for this special event.
The one day festival is celebrating both our one hundred and fiftieth anniversary as a country, but also the breadth of amazing films made by Canadian talent. The program has been named one of the most ambitious retrospectives of Canadian moving-image heritage ever done.
In New Westminster, the screening will be at the Landmark Cinema in downtown New Westminster, where the annual NewWest FilmFest is held every fall.
“We are quite excited to be invited by TIFF to be part of this national celebration of our favorite storytelling medium, film, here in New Westminster,” said board member Deni Loubert. “We invite everyone to come and celebrate with us at the Landmark for either one of our two free screenings on April 19th”
There will be two screenings of the documentary film, the first screening at 1pm and the second one at 7PM, both at the Landmark Cinema at The Plaza, 800 Carnarvon Street in downtown New Westminster. Both screenings are free.
Event: Canada on Screen Celebration
Date: April 19th – 1PM and 7PM
Film: Stories We Tell
Cost: Free
Location: Landmark Cinema, downtown New Westminster
