City of New Westminster was established and became the first capital city of the new colony of British Columbia
1866
The colony of British Columbia and the colony of Vancouver Island were united and the City of Victoria became the capital city for the newly amalgamated colony

The "great fire" wiped out most of Downtown New West
1930s
Columbia Street became known as the "Golden Mile", a prime shopping and services destination, the main commercial service centre for the Fraser Valley and surrounding areas
1950s
The new freeway and building of suburban malls with free parking contributed to the decline of Columbia Street businesses, the Front Street Parkade is built
1989
Downtown New West BIA was formed by concerned business operators who wanted to see us return to our original glory, The Original Downtown!
Today
Downtown New West is experiencing a major rise in popularity with lots of new development, a bustling waterfront and burgeoning foodie scene.
