Anvil Centre Artist-in-Residence Program
The City of New Westminster and the Arts Services Department are excited to announce the launch of the Anvil Centre Artist-in-Residence Program. In its inaugural year, the AiR is a self-directed residency program offering opportunities for artists to focus on work in a creative environment, with dedicated studio time.
This residency accommodates artists and artist collectives working in sculpture, print, fiber, drawing, painting, writing and literary arts, music, dance and performance for a four-week period for research, development and production of new or ongoing bodies of work. In exchange, artists will facilitate an outreach program for the local community during their residency.
With over 30 applications from artists and artist groups across the Lower Mainland, 14 projects were selected, supporting 20 artists across a variety of media and practices including writing, music and composition, photography, performing arts, dance and choreography, and social practice.
January 2017, we welcome our first Artist-in-Residence, Sam Davidson. Davidson (B.Mus) is a specialist in the EWI, a breath-controlled synthesizer of under-realized potential which he features in his recordings and performances. He is a member of Canadian band Brasstronaut who have toured Europe and North America extensively. He also performs as sideman to Toronto violinist Jaron Freeman-Fox and The Opposite of Everything.
For the duration of the residency Davidson will be working across several genres and instruments all the while building new repertoire and developing his compositional techniques. Using 'early music' (AD1620-1720) as source material, Davidson will be immersing himself in baroque melodies and extracting their themes to recycle into new innovative works.
Join us for pop-up performances Friday, January 13th 12:00pm and Tuesday, January 17th at 6:00pm, and attend the final presentation of his practice and residency project Saturday, February 4th at 3:00pm.

Daphne Marlatt is a critically acclaimed poet (Steveston, Liquidities) and novelist (Ana Historic, Taken). Her most recent title, Reading Sveva features a series of poems in response to the life and work of the Italian-Canadian painter, Sveva Caetani.
Roy Miki grew up in Winnipeg and moved to Vancouver in the late 1960s. He is the author of many books, including Redress: Inside the Japanese Canadian Call for Justice (Raincoast 2004), as well as five books of poems. His third book of poems, Surrender (Mercury Press 2001), received the Governor General’s Award for Poetry. More recent publications are Mannequin Rising (New Star 2011), a series of poems and photo collages that probe the internal effects of commodity culture; In Flux: Transnational Shifts in Asian Canadian Writing (NeWest 2011), an essay collection; and Dolphin SOS (Tradewind Books 2014), a children’s book co-written with his wife Slavia, and illustrated by Julie Flett. Dolphin SOS received a 2014 BC Book Prize for best illustrated children’s book.

Story – Powering our Youth
DRAMATIZED STORYTELLING, TRADITIONAL AFRICAN DANCES, AND LIVE DRUMMING!
Celebrate Black History Month 2017 with a Difference:
African Stages Association of BC presents: Story-Powering Our Youths
Story-Powering Our Youths is a journey from weakness to empowerment, from diffidence to confidence, and from alienation to integration. Our youths are ready to face life with preparation, empowered by their cultural identity, values, and fairness. During the workshops, they learn how to support their peers, how to stand against bullies, and how to be fair and supportive to each other. All these happen not with too much teaching but with African Performing Arts. Now, we want to show our youths achievements in a bigger spectrum. Come and see for yourself. All family members will enjoy our performance.
The event will feature African Stages’ youth group who will use dramatized storytelling, drumming and dancing to herald messages of solidary and inclusion. This performance is directed by BC-based, award-winning teacher, writer and storyteller, Comfort Adesuwa Ero.

BRINK is a group exhibition that pivots between control and anarchy. Electronic media & robotic works as well video installations suggest the construction of fragile balances : technological, political, territorial, ecosystemic, psychological. There are ambiguous tensions here; between freedom of choice and its repercussions; between what we understand as success, failure or stasis. Works teeter, circle and flail out of control. There is always an acute awareness of boundaries and territories. The timing and anticipation of what might happen next; the resolution we hope for (the resolution we fear) leads us to the brink.

Seniors Services Society is the point of contact for many services providers and individuals across the lower mainland looking for services for seniors in need. The need for more services continues to grow in all areas, and is particularly apparent in our housing department. Homelessness among the senior population has become a major concern in metro Vancouver. As the only agency that works exclusively with the elderly who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, we are seeing firsthand the increase in numbers of seniors facing a housing crisis.

10th Annual Singing Can Be A Drag!

A respectable drag queen never tells her real age, but the Vancouver Men’s Chorus – now celebrating its 36th season, is proud to present its tenth annual fem-spectacular fundraiser – Singing Can Be A Drag!
Vancouver’s very own drag icon and VMC life-member, Bill Monroe will host an evening of live-singing, female-impersonating musical entertainment performed by the VMC’s own inner-diva starlets – featuring covers of your favourite recognizable (some unrecognizable) divas!
This musical treat promises you more evening-length glamour, more vocal-feats, higher kicks and more synthetic hair than seen at your cousin’s wedding! Mark your social calendar and bring your friends! Proceeds help support the VMC in its LGBT community outreach and mainstage concert programming. Thank you! Warning! Viewers may be exposed to wardrobe malfunctions, flying sequins, improvised lyrics, mixing of fabric patterns, polyester blends, gender-questioning sexual urges, infectious camp and other spontaneously occurring un-scripted performance phenomenons!

Started in Tokyo in 2003 by Klein Dytham Architecture firm, PechaKucha Night began as a fun and unique night of local culture and entertainment. Ten presenters from a range of fields share their interesting projects, inspirations and passions. There's only one catch - presenters get 20 images, 20 seconds each, making for a 6 minute and 40 second shot of ideas and inspiration.
Join us for drinks at starting at 7:00 pm on the 14th floor and enjoy local craft beer, wine and relaxed sounds from DJ Mutes Ito. At 8:00 the fun starts with our ten PechaKucha talks and a short intermission mid-way.
And once it's all over, join us for a late-night reception with more to drink, more relaxed sounds from our resident DJ and some snacks to enjoy.
Prepare to be engaged, entertained and inspired.
